Planet Briefing

Privacy policy

Effective October 11, 2026

Planet Briefing is operated by 2620612 Ontario Inc. This policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and retain personal information when you use the website, create an account, contact us, configure notifications, or make a contribution.

Information we collect

When you create or use an account, we may store your email address, account identifier, sign-in method, verification status, preferences, and notification settings. Email and password accounts use a salted password hash; we do not store the original password. Google and Microsoft sign-in are handled by those providers, and we receive the account information they make available to us, such as a verified email address and provider identifier.

Preferences may include event interests, bookmarked events, time zone, notification choices, and the city-centre coordinates and radius of cities you choose to follow. We do not request or store street addresses for saved places. Guest preferences, cookie consent, theme, and event-view choices may be stored on your device. When you are signed in, your theme choice is also stored in your account profile so it can follow you across devices.

The site requests precise browser location only when you ask to find your current city. The precise browser coordinates are discarded after the city is resolved; only the selected city centre, region, country, label, radius, and alert choice are retained. Saved-place coordinates are not included in public URLs or analytics events.

Planet Briefing reads the time zone configured in your browser or operating system to display event and briefing timestamps in your local time with a time-zone label. This browser setting is available without a permission prompt and does not require precise location access. The underlying event timestamps remain stored in UTC.

Contact submissions may include your name, email address, message, related event URL, attachments, and our replies. When you contribute, Stripe processes the payment details; Planet Briefing stores limited transaction information such as the Stripe session identifier, amount, currency, status, and timestamps, but not complete payment-card details.

Our hosting and security services may automatically process technical information such as IP address, request time, browser or device information, requested pages, diagnostic logs, and security signals. Cloudflare Turnstile may process technical information to prevent abusive contact submissions.

Planet Briefing also records IP address, country or region, browser name, visit count, and first and most recent visit times for first-party traffic measurement and service operation. We also retain the visited landing path, referring domain, and campaign labels supplied in standard UTM parameters so we can distinguish search, social, referral, and direct visits. We do not retain referrer query strings or use this information to build advertising profiles. We also record first-party page views, active time on content pages, and interactions with event maps so we can measure which parts of the service provide sustained value. These engagement records use a hashed network identifier rather than an account identity.

How we use information

We use personal information to provide and secure accounts, remember preferences, personalize event results, send requested briefings or urgent alerts, respond to contact submissions, process and record contributions, prevent fraud and abuse, troubleshoot the service, meet legal obligations, and improve Planet Briefing. We do not sell personal information.

Cookies and advertising

Necessary cookies support authentication, security, consent choices, interface settings, and guest preferences. Consent and guest-preference cookies are configured for up to 180 days. Advertising is loaded only after you accept optional advertising storage, and Planet Briefing requests non-personalized ads from Google AdSense. You can reopen Cookie settings from the footer and change your choice at any time; changing the choice does not necessarily remove cookies previously placed by a third party, which you can remove using your browser controls.

Service providers and disclosure

We use service providers to operate Planet Briefing, including Microsoft Azure for hosting, databases, maps, and email delivery; Google or Microsoft for optional external sign-in; Stripe for contributions; Cloudflare for bot protection; and Google AdSense for consented advertising. These providers process information under their own terms and may process it in countries outside your province or country. We may also disclose information when required by law, to protect rights or safety, to investigate abuse, or as part of a corporate transaction subject to appropriate safeguards.

Retention and account deletion

Account profiles and synchronized preferences are generally retained while the account is active. Contact submissions and attachments are assigned a one-year retention period. First-party traffic records are assigned a one-year retention period. Notification and security records are retained only as reasonably needed to operate and protect the service. Contribution records may be retained for accounting, fraud prevention, and legal compliance.

You may delete your account from the Account page. Deletion removes the Planet Briefing profile, notification-delivery records, and locally stored email credential associated with that account, including saved places and their alert settings, and signs you out. Limited audit, transaction, backup, or legal records may remain where necessary, and deleting Planet Briefing data does not delete information independently held by an external identity, payment, advertising, or infrastructure provider.

Your choices and rights

You can update event and notification preferences, unsubscribe using links in notification emails, reject optional advertising storage, sign out, or delete your account. Depending on where you live, you may also have rights to request access to, correction of, or deletion of personal information, or to withdraw consent subject to legal limitations. Submit a privacy request through our contact page. We may need to verify your identity before completing a request.

Security, children, and policy changes

We use administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards designed to protect personal information, but no online service can guarantee absolute security. Planet Briefing is intended for a general audience and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

We may update this policy as the service or legal requirements change. The revised version will be posted here with a new effective date. Questions about this policy or our privacy practices may be submitted through the contact page.
